2008 marked a year when I got to experience hassle-free Linux for the first time. Having messed around with text-based installations, mandatory Kernel compilations and broken sound for years, Ubuntu just worked.
It also introduced me to the 3D rendered desktop, in the form of the compositor Compiz Fusion which enabled all these cool effects:
All these eventually made it into other OS:es, but remember folks where it all began!
Unfortunately, I cannot find the original source of the wallpaper. The bottom pane shows a few applications pinned, from left to right: Gnome-Terminal, Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, Audacious and Deluge.
